AVIATION PIONEER WALTER BEECH TO BE HONORED IN TENNESSEE

(TULLAHOMA, TENN)

The Beechcraft Heritage Museum is pleased to announce a special dedication ceremony for aviation pioneer, Walter H. Beech. A Tennessee Historical Commission Highway Marker will be dedicated in his home town of Pulaski, TN.

The ceremony begins at 12:00 PM on Friday, October 9, near the First National Bank, at 100 College St., and is free and open to the public. Beechcraft Heritage MuseumHistorian Robert K. Parmerter, who led this special recognition effort, will deliver a short presentation on Walter Beech. Special guests will include members of the Beech family, representatives from the Beechcraft Heritage Museum, representatives from Hawker Beechcraft Corporation and local officials. The ceremony will conclude with an airborne parade of Beechcraft models, ranging from the late 1930s thru today.

Display materials, books, and photos of Walter Beech will be presented to the GilesCounty Library, Pulaski School Library, Giles County Historical Society and Abernathy Field (Pulaski Airport).

Born in Pulaski in 1891, Walter Beech became interested in aviation during his service in World War I. In 1924, he helped to establish the Travel Air Manufacturing Company, in Wichita, Kansas. By 1929, that company was the world's largest producer of commercial aircraft. In April of 1932, Beech and his wife Olive Ann founded Beech Aircraft Company, also in Wichita, Kansas. The company continues today as Hawker Beechcraft Corporation and is a world-leading manufacturer of business, special mission and trainer aircraft.

Walter Beech was inducted into the National (1977), International (1982), Kansas (1987), and Tennessee (2005) Aviation Halls of Fame.

The Beechcraft Heritage Museum is a one-of-a-kind aviation museum open to the general public, located 70 miles southeast of Nashville, Tennessee adjacent to the Tullahoma Regional Airport (KTHA). Over 30 aircraft are on display, including the first Beechcraft, a Model 17 "Staggerwing".
